May 14, 2010: We were caught way behind the eight-ball today. We were headed to our target in Midland, Texas, when storms fired in early afternoon, far earlier than expected. We missed the first storm of the day in our target area, meaning we missed the tornado. The rest of the storms were contaminated with cold air and did very little. I chased with Scott McPartland and Dave Lewison, and Mark Robinson and his crew, but I separated from them for a while and ended up just driving around in the rain, pursuing tornado-warned cells and watching them fall apart. At least I saw a little structure later when I got south of the backbuilding storms. Share

I split with my friends in an attempt to find a better route. After being caught behind the early-firing storms all day, even driving to New Mexico and back, I finally broke out of the rain and caught up with them again in Crane, Texas. Drawing on cool air, this storm, though beautiful, couldn't get its act together. We let this cell go east and pursued the backbuilding cells to the west.

We were surrounded by convection. This cell showed some rotation on radar. Chunky mammatus formed on the cell to the east.

I was separated from my friends again, and pursued the storm for a while as it moved southeast. Cactus seem to be blooming everywhere! The storm showed a little rotation.

Mostly, though, it was dominated by outflow, so I didn't expect a tornado. There goes the turbulent outflow. I got into some quarter-size hail, and then I turned around and let it go.
