9 August 2014:
Beautiful shelf cloud in Brevard County, Florida

August 9, 2014: Storms in Brevard County, Florida, this afternoon grew strong quickly, forming scalloped shelf clouds and dumping prodigious amounts of rain. I got ahead of them by rushing to Merritt Island and shooting back east at Cocoa, then continuing east to Cocoa Beach and ultimately Port Canaveral. Share

Rain forced me to cancel a portrait shoot, so I dashed across the Indian River Lagoon and shot the storm coming in over Cocoa, Florida, at 5:02 p.m.
    A shelf cloud was forming.
And a huge downpour was moving in, sending the birds flying.
    The rain creeps farther ...
    It's moving in ...
    It's almost here...
And I got another shot looking northwest before heading east again at 5:07 p.m.
Over the Banana River Lagoon at Cocoa Beach, the shelf cloud was scalloped. This was a 5:18 p.m.
This jet-skier was shooting photos before retreating.
    Here it comes ...
    And it's almost overhead!
I got a few final shots of the rain hitting Port Canaveral to conclude the chase.
