Several intense storms formed in central Florida May 26. Here are some views from the St. Johns River off State Road 520. The suggestive image on the left is a "smokenado," a column of smoke from a large fire. The third image has a tiny, distant lightning bolt that you might be able to see if you click for the larger version. Digital images.




Fellow chaser Cheryl Chang came along, and after watching the brewing storms for a while, along with some crazy fishermen who were tempting fate in the lightning, we chased the storm east. From Merritt Island, the view of the shelf cloud was impressive. Digital images.
