July 29, 2000, lightning bolt movie

On a chase July 29, 2000, in Lake County, Florida, a lightning bolt struck dangerously close to me and fellow chasers Cheryl Chang and Steve Sponsler. Fortunately, I was in my car at the time (and they soon were in theirs). My yelp is embarrassing but funny - and reveals just how close the bolt was. Here is a short, small movie (about 94K) of the strike, which I recorded with a digital video camera. You'll need QuickTime 4 (a free plug-in) to view it. NOTE: If you don't see the big bolt the first time through, rewind (or slide the bar backward) and try again. Sometimes Web playback doesn't always show the bolt, which happens in the blink of an eye. Also ... If you can't hear sound, you probably haven't upgraded to QuickTime 4 or higher.

Here's the freeze-frame from the video of the bolt. An actual lighting bolt is only about an inch in diameter, so this one probably looks extra-wide because the brilliant flash overexposed the video for a moment.
